24 hour creativity slam |
Each Spring the ACE Center hosts the 24 Hour Creativity Slam which is a competition intended to spur collaboration, inspiration and innovation among students from Savannah State and other schools in the surrounding area. In the Spring of 2011 students from SSU, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and Georgia Southern
University participated in the first annual Creativity Slam. Students from the different schools were randomly assigned to inter-college teams and a representative from Enterprise Rentals gave them a creative problem to solve – How could they A) make their services more “Green” and B) how could they make their customers more aware of the “Green” services that they do have. The teams then had 24 hours to develop a solution and presentation. The teams came up with some wonderful ideas and it was truly an inspiration to see the students with varied academic focuses come together to develop some very unique ideas. The winners received gift cards to Target and dinner with Enterprise executives. |
ACE speaker seriesIn order to expose the SSU community to cutting edge ideas on creativity and
entrepreneurship, the ACE center intends to regularly bring creativity and entrepreneurship scholars and practitioners onto campus to share their insights. We will bring several speakers at a time to maximize the exposure and discussion of ideas. Our first speaker series, held in April of 2011, included Dr. Sam Hunter, a creativity scholar from Penn State University and Dr. John Osiri, an entrepreneurship scholar from Washington State University, Pullman. |
external competitionsThe ACE Center actively encourages participation in creativity and entrepreneurship oriented events outside the university and provides support and coaching to the students that choose to compete. So far, SSU students have competed successfully in the OFC Venture competition and the Savannah FastPitch competition. In the Spring of 2011, two SSU students, Pebbles Winston and David Prejean, placed 2nd in the student part of the Savannah FastPitch competition. The Center hopes to continue to increase the number of students representing SSU in these competitions.
